376. “Level this planet” Cartoon

June 15, 2021

Q: There was a cartoon about a UFO landing in NYC.  One alien gets out to explore and gets mugged, etc.  When he gets back to the ship, he is asked how it was by his alien colleagues and his response is “Level this planet.”

A: Once again, Cartoon Carol to the rescue: “Found it! ‘Close Encounter With Ronnie’ by ‘Stevens and Spielberg’ (actually Chris Browne) appears on page 76 of the Feb. 1978 ‘Spring Fascism Preview’ ish.”

Thanks, Carol! (More info in the comments below.)

Found it! "Close Encounter With Ronnie" by "Stevens and Spielberg" (actually Chris Browne) appears on page 76 of the Feb. 1978 "Spring Fascism Preview" ish. It's an odd sort of cross between CE3K and "Blondie" (the comic strip, not the band). The Roy Neary/ Dagwood figure, building a mountain in his living room, is visited by the alien and beats him up, in mistake for a door to door salesman. The punchline is indeed "Level this planet!"

Wow, I don't remember that one at all---and it's pretty great. Classic Chris Browne! Thanks so much for finding it, Carol!
