404. In Case of Nuclear War (Radio Hour)

December 12, 2025

Q. I recall listening to the NL Radio Hour back when I was a teenager (of course on the local university FM station, with headphones, up in my room). There is something I recall regarding how to act in a national emergency, nuclear war, etc. The speaker said to “cover yourself in wet newspapers.”  I don’t recall the context, the skit, etc. Any thoughts?

A. I’m afraid I don’t know the answer without going through the shows bit by bit. It’s probably in one of the earlier shows, but I’m more familiar with the later ones. I did spot a likely candidate in the listings for show #9 (“Public Service Announcement: in Case of a Nuclear Attack”), but it said nothing about wet newspapers. If anyone remembers this and can provide more information, please comment below.
