403. Vietnam Vet Cartoon
December 1, 2025
Q. A friend of mine and I have been trying to track down a cartoon that appeared in National Lampoon. It depicted a Vietnam veteran who had come back from the war as an upstanding member of society, kissing babies and the like. In the second panel it said something like “But get a load of the old sarge…” when he was in Vietnam, and I think the cartoon depicted him bayonetting a child or doing something equally awful.
A. Found it! It was in the July 1972 (“Surprise!”) issue as part of the “Saigon Times” newspaper parody, written by John Boni and Henry Beard. The cartoon itself was a parody, illustrated by Randall Enos, of Jimmy Hatlo’s popular syndicated comic strip “They’ll Do It Every Time.”
