277. Vikings’ Landing Before Columbus

February 28, 2011

Q: I remember an issue in the mid-seventies that had a single cartoon titled something like “Proof Vikings landed before Columbus” A great image of burly Vikings coming ashore in an Indian village and mounting everything (squaws, totem poles, canoes). I looked around and can’t find a reference to it.

A: It was the “Surprise Poster” in the May 1976 (Unwanted Foreigners) issue (page 90).

I remember the cartoon well. It was beautifully-rendered, in full color. It was hilarious. In the way that politically-incorrect humour could be in those days.
