53. Hemingway Parody

November 5, 2003

Q: I’m looking for the Hemingway parody of a Nick Adams story where a guy gets locked inside a sporting goods store at night. I can’t recall exactly when it was as I read my brother’s hand-me-down issues before I started buying my own. I’d say most likely ’79-’84.

A: “The Sun Also Sets” by Joey Green in the November 1982 issue. (Thanks to Jay.)

Comments

Called "The Sun Also Sets," it was in the November, 1982, National Lampoon. It was briefly on the Lampoon website's "flashbacks" section, but the author requested it be down because he still owned the rights to the story.

What you're thinking of -- and what I can't find on this site -- is "Big Game Shopping with Ernest Hemingway." It was hilarious, and I would love to find a copy. Basically, it had Hemingway pushing a shopping cart around in a store talking about how important it is "to shop cleanly and well." At some point he runs into Gertrude Stein, and at another he suffers the wound he fears the most ... a paper cut. Somebody besides me MUST remember that.

OK, so that wasn't what YOU were thinking of. But it's what I was thinking of. So where is it?
