68. New York Bar Exam Parody

Q: I recall an issue of either National Lampoon or Harvard Lampoon with a wonderful parody of the New York State Bar Exam. I remember it vividly, although it must have run 20 or 30 years ago. But I don’t recall the year or the issue.

A: It was in the August 1975 (Justice) issue of National Lampoon. The authors were John Weidman and Tony Hendra.

I too would very much appreciate a copy if the bar exam in question was not a real exam but a welcome note informing a member of a favored class that he was being admitted without needing to sweat answering any tough questions, whereas the African-American applicant next to him "has a real exam." I bought a copy of the Justice issue on the newsstand but lost it many years ago. Just tonight I has thinking of it and googled "National Lampoon" and "bar exam" because the situation in that Lampoon is quite close to the reality of a governmental process that has been used recently by certain federal regulators to discriminate between favored and disfavored regulated entities.

Reading an article about U of Illinois law school inflating scores promted me to search for Nat Lamps NY Bar Exam, I had all the issues (Buy This Mag or We'll Kill This Dog) but my mom threw them out. If I remember correctly the Justice issue also had a caricture of "Amicus Curie" showing all of the justices engaged in various obscene activities. If you could e-mail a copy of the exam I'd love to share it with some newly barred attorneys that I mentor
