November 27, 2002 Laughs From the Past ...and future? Wilbur Entertainment recently completed a deal with National Lampoon (two years in the making) to relaunch the National Lampoon Radio Hour, including both the classic shows and new material. Produced by Alan Donnes and Tanner Colby, the shows are being offered to radio stations as complete shows and also a "prep service," meaning bits can be aired individually at the radio station's discretion. What little I've heard of the new material shows promise, but, at the very least, having the classic shows back on the air is a very good thing. As a special treat to readers of Mark's Very Large National Lampoon Site, I have been given permission to offer the following bits (in MP3 format) for your listening and/or downloading pleasure: This Day In History: Aerosmith (new) This Day In History: The Confederacy (new) This Day in History: The Death of Jim Morrison (new) God So Loved the World... (from the Easter show, 1974) Hispanic Room (new) Do You Get Nervous Around Retards? with Laura Bush (new) Monolithic Oil Commercial (from January 1974) The White Ladies (new) Redneck Premium Pre-Chewed Tobacco Commercial (new) Some stations may already have picked up the show. If your local station hasn't done so, and you would like them to broadcast the show, feel free to call, write, heck--drive right down to the station with a big wad of cash, if you like--and have them contact Wilbur Entertainment at 831-429-2050, ext. 11, for more information. (I would appreciate your not mentioning my name if you go the big-wad-of-cash route.) Posted November 27, 2002, 10:08 PM in News. November 26, 2002 Things have been awfully busy out in the L.A. headquarters of your favorite brand: On September 5, 2002, National Lampoon acquired Burly Bear Network, a TV network distributed to colleges and universities. On October 10, 2002, National Lampoon struck a deal with ZelnickMedia in order to "build the legendary Lampoon brand." On October 24, 2002, National Lampoon announced the launch of "National Lampoon Books." The first title will be a reprint of the 1964 High School Yearbook Parody, originally published in 1974 and probably the most successful venture the magazine undertook during its heyday. It's schedule to be released in about a year and will include a "where are they now" addendum. On November 5, 2002, National Lampoon officially changed its name from "J2 Communications, Inc." to "National Lampoon, Inc." (And about time, too.) And, most recently, on November 18, 2002, former National Lampoon publisher Matty Simmons has rejoined the company to "help reconnect the company to the wide network of National Lampoon alumni and return the company to its comedic roots." Other planned announcements include the first practical demonstration of porcine flight, the exhumation and reanimation of Doug Kenney and Michael O'Donoghue, and affordable health insurance for every man, woman, and child in the U.S. Seriously, the future looks bright for National Lampoon fans. You can read more about these announcements on Yahoo! Finance. Posted November 26, 2002, 04:18 PM in News.
