165. Hippie Village Story

Q: I have a recollection of a story that appeared in a NL issue from probably the mid- to late- ’70s. It involved a person in some sort of hippie village or cottages, maybe on Long Island. I think it involved drug problems. Vague, I know. Still, does this ring a bell for you?

A: Sounds kind of like a Chris Miller story, and it is. Carol found it: “The story is ‘Lunacy’ in the ‘Back to College’ ish, Sept/Oct 1989. It is indeed by Chris Miller, with illos by the famous Stanley Mouse. However, it is set on Fire Island, not Long Island.” Thanks, Carol!

Vague indeed, but two ‘hippie village’ possibilities come to mind…
(1)”Velveeta” in the 1977 ‘Poon special “The Up Yourself Book” by Gerald Sussman. The protagonists visit a commune, called Velveeta because it was built out of government surplus cheese. The inhabitants are into violence and hand-made shopping bags. But this was in California, not Long Island.
    (2) There was a piece called (I think) “Health Food Hell” in which a guy wins a vacation at a health resort and has a rotten time. This was probably in a late 80’s issue tho’, and I’m not sure which.

I just got the complete ‘Poon DVD, and this is the first question I’ve found an answer to in it. The story is “Lunacy” in the ‘Back to College’ ish, Sept/Oct 1989. It is indeed by Chris Miller, with illos by the famous Stanley Mouse. However, it is set on Fire Island, not Long Island.
